A doctoral student was killed in Chicago Sunday after he was hit by a stray bullet, only four hours after he arrived, police said.

Investigators said after his arrival, Shane Colombo went to buy clothes hangers in Chicago’s Rogers Park neighborhood when he was caught in the crossfire of a gunfight. He was shot in the stomach and died at a hospital.

2. “We were worried about her moving to Chicago”

aarenoconnor

California native Aaren O’Connor moved to Chicago to start a new life with her boyfriend after the pair met studying abroad in Japan while O’Connor was a student at the University of San Diego. The 25-year-old chose to live in Pilsen, a neighborhood she thought was safe.

“When she told us she was moving to Pilsen, we were fearful for her and she said, ‘no I looked into it that part of the city looks ok,’ and she was excited to be part of the Chicago community,” said Sarah Moen, O’Connor’s coworker.

That coworker’s fears came true when O’Connor was sitting in her car at West 21st Place and South Damen Avenue and was killed by a stray bullet. O’Connor was talking on the phone with her family in San Diego when she was shot. The shooting happened a year ago, and police said they know who fired the shots, but do not have enough evidence to charge him.

4. FBI Agent carjacked in Chicago

2176859_1280x720

An FBI-issued SUV stolen when an agent left it running at a gas station early Monday was found about 2 miles away later in the day, but investigators didn’t immediately know if weapons stolen with it were inside, authorities said.

At 1 a.m., the FBI vehicle, a white 2014 Chevrolet Equinox containing several firearms and tactical gear such as a bulletproof vest, was stolen from a gas station in the 300 block of South Morgan Street, an FBI spokesman said in an email. Police were able to track down the SUV after a parking ticket was issued to it while it was parked in the 900 block of South Leavitt Street, about 2 miles from where it was stolen, police said.

Monday night, uniformed and plainclothes investigators huddled on Leavitt Street, where the SUV sat with a its gas cap undone and a parking ticket on the window — less than a half-mile away from the FBI Chicago Field Office, which could be seen from the scene.

Authorities hadn’t searched inside the vehicle to see if any of the weapons were still inside. Instead, officers called for a tow truck to take it to be processed. Another vehicle was found earlier in the day with some of the gear inside, but not the handguns, an official said.

Bill Garcia, who lives on the block, read about the theft earlier in the day, because he works in the area where the vehicle was stolen. Later in the evening, as he was taking out the garbage, police swarmed the SUV parked in front of his home.

5. Minnesota woman robbed at gunpoint while visiting relatives in Chicago

A Minnesota woman visiting relatives for Thanksgiving was robbed at gunpoint in Chatham Tuesday morning.

The robbery was caught on tape by a surveillance camera.

Donna Hart exited her relative’s home on the 8800 block of South Wabash Avenue at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday to retrieve belongings from her car.

Two teenage robbers then approached Hart with a gun.

“I turned around and said, ‘What did you say?’ That’s when he pulled a gun and said, ‘What do you have in your pockets?,'” Hart said. ‘I said ‘I don’t have anything in my pockets.”

Hart surrendered her belongings and car keys. The video shows her looking directly at the gunman.

“I’m focusing on him because he has a 9 millimeter pointed at me,” Hart said. “I was like, ‘Can I have my face wash, my toothpaste and toothbrush back.’ He looked at me and said, ‘yeah’ in a little meek voice like he was a child, which he was.”

The suspects then fled in Hart’s 2013 Hyundai Sonata. Hart said she remained calm so the robbers wouldn’t shoot her.

Hart’s relatives later spotted the car in Chicago, but the driver eluded police.

“I had to keep calm. I had to keep him calm because I didn’t want him to shoot me with that gun.”

The car was recovered by police at approximately 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. The vehicle is currently in an impound lot, authorities said.

Police said they do not have anyone in custody
