Instances of Backlash against Chinese and Indians


According to a recent Pew Research Center survey of six African countries, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, andUganda had higher disapproval towards China compared to previous years while they had higher positive view for the United States.


Ghanaians have alleged Chinese miners of illegally seizing jobs, polluting community water supplies, and disturbing agricultural production through their work.

A sixteen-year-old illegal Chinese miner was shot in 2012, while trying to escape arrest. After this incident, the Chinese miners needed to arm themselves.[101]


Multiple presidential candidate Michael Sata has often invoked harsh rhetoric against the Chinese commercial presence in Africa’s largest copper producing country. A convenience store clerk, often a Patel or someone of Indian-origin, is killed in a robbery every few months somewhere in America. In fact, according to the Center for Problem-oriented Policing, convenience store employees in the US suffer from high rates of workplace homicide, second only to taxicab drivers, where too large numbers of Indian-origin people are employed. No precise numbers of Indians killed in these dangerous professions are available, but here is a random sample of incidents that highlight the dangers Patels face at their workplace everyday
